Over this last weekend, I visited Copenhagen. Although I was not a huge fan of the city (perhaps because it was their off season for tourism), I was very interested in the area called Freetown Christiania. While randomly stumbling into this place, we were amazed by the artsy and laidback feeling that it gave off. While taking pictures, we were stopped by a few people who warned us "not to take pictures or our cameras would be taken". Apparently, it was originally used by the military, but after the war, it was abandoned and homeless people moved in. It has turned into a very hippie, free-spirited village that is now an autonomous neighborhood of 850 residents. In 1971, it was granted its own mission statement by the Danish government by which they can make their own laws. Although it is still questionable, it has become a huge tourist attraction where many visitors go everyday to get a taste of Danish history that they won't find anywhere else. After visiting Christiania, I was very interested in how a place like this has not gone out of control over the years, but after researching online, it seems the Christianians have actually got their heads on straight by evicting any violent gangs and forbidding all uses of hard drugs. Wikipedia gives a pretty interesting description of this neighborhood --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freetown_Christiania
